Fisherman saves baby humpback tangled in cray pot lines

This video shows the dramatic moment a fisherman dived in to the sea to free a baby whale after it got caught in cray pot lines.

Charter boat skipper Joe Brogan, from Whitianga, New Zealand, leapt to action when his crew encountered the humpback near Geraldton off the western coast of Australia, which had ropes tied around its tail and was in distress.

It appeared the whale knew what was happening, as it seemed to calm when Joe swam towards it and started working to free it from the lines with a knife.

The kiwi crew shouted advice to the skipper as he struggled to free the whale and celebrated when the whale finally broke free.

Joe’s father Paddy said his son wouldn’t have thought twice about diving in to rescue the whale.

‘The whale was in the shit, so he jumped in and did it,’ he told New Zealand’s 3 News.
